Which 2027 Honda Passport Trim Is Right for You? RT-L, TrailSport and TrailSport Elite Compared

The 2027 Honda Passport comes in three trims: RT-L ($45,195), TrailSport ($49,995) and TrailSport Elite ($53,695). Two factory versions round out the lineup: the RT-L Towing adds a Class III hitch for +$700, and a Blackout package on the TrailSport and TrailSport Elite adds +$1,500. Every Passport shares a 280-hp 3.5-liter V6, 10-speed automatic, i-VTM4 all-wheel drive, a 5,000-lb tow rating and the full Honda Sensing suite. Stepping up to the TrailSport ($4,800 more) buys real trail hardware: 9.6 inches of ground clearance, all-terrain tires, skid plates, recovery hooks, TrailWatch cameras and a factory hitch. The TrailSport Elite ($3,700 more) adds comfort: perforated leather, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a 12-speaker Bose system and a hands-free liftgate.

In Merced, the Passport trim question is about heat and Yosemite. The RT-L handles Highway 99. The TrailSport adds clearance and all-terrain tires for Sierra dirt roads, and the Elite adds ventilated seats for valley summers.

Which trim is the best value?
For most Merced County buyers, the TrailSport. Its $4,800 premium over the RT-L includes a hitch (a $700 option on the RT-L), all-terrain tires, skid plates, TrailWatch, a moonroof and a heated wheel.
Is AWD standard?
Yes. Every 2027 Passport has i-VTM4 torque-vectoring all-wheel drive with Trail Torque Logic and seven drive modes.
Which trims include a hitch?
The RT-L Towing and all four TrailSport versions. Every Passport is rated for 5,000 lbs when properly equipped.
Leather or synthetic?
Leather on the RT-L and perforated leather on the TrailSport Elite. The TrailSport uses HondaTex synthetic leather with cloth.
What does Blackout add?
For $1,500: black 18-inch alloys, black Honda badges and black front and rear skid garnishes. Equipment is otherwise identical.
Best Passport for Merced County?
On pavement, including Highway 140 through the Merced River canyon to Yosemite, the RT-L does everything you need. For dirt roads in the Sierra National Forest, step up to the TrailSport, and add the Elite for ventilated seats and Bose audio.

Trade-offs

What You Give Up When You Move Up

Most dealers only tell you what you gain. Here's what you lose.

Moving from RT-L to TrailSport

  • Real leather. The TrailSport uses HondaTex synthetic leather and cloth; the RT-L has leather-trimmed seats.
  • Interior color choice. The RT-L offers black or gray; the TrailSport is black only.
  • Fuel economy: 19/25/21 mpg becomes 18/22/20, a 3-mpg drop on the highway.
  • Headroom: front drops from 40.5 to 39.1 in. and rear from 40.7 to 39.6 in., and passenger volume from 119.1 to 115.4 cu ft.
  • Departure angle: 27.1° on the RT-L versus 25.3° on the TrailSport, which trades some departure angle for its 25.4° approach angle and 9.6 in. of clearance.
  • Low-profile height: the TrailSport stands 74.5 in. tall versus 73.1 in., worth checking if you add a roof box.
  • Tire speed rating: the all-terrains are T-rated (113T) versus the RT-L's H-rated all-seasons (110H).
  • Curb weight rises 198 lbs, from 4,478 to 4,676.

Moving from TrailSport to Elite

  • Orange ambient lighting. The Elite switches to white (it keeps the orange steering-wheel stitching).
  • Matte Shark Gray wheels, swapped for Berlina Black machine-face alloys.
  • 29 lbs of curb weight (4,705 vs. 4,676). Nothing functional is lost.

Adding Blackout

  • The standard wheel finish. Blackout wheels are black alloys on both TrailSport trims.
  • $1,500, for appearance only. Capability and features don't change.

Trim vs. trim

Passport Trim vs. Trim

RT-L vs. RT-L Towing

RT-L $45,195 vs. RT-L Towing $45,895

For $700, the RT-L Towing adds a factory Class III hitch with harness and hitch panel, nothing else. If you'll ever haul a trailer to Lake McClure, it's the version to get.

RT-L Towing vs. TrailSport

RT-L Towing $45,895 vs. TrailSport $49,995

Both tow from the factory; $4,100 separates them. The TrailSport brings the off-road kit, a moonroof, a heated wheel and 115-volt power. The RT-L Towing keeps leather, a gray cabin option and 25 highway mpg.

TrailSport vs. TrailSport Elite

TrailSport $49,995 vs. TrailSport Elite $53,695

This $3,700 step buys comfort only: perforated leather, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, Bose audio, a hands-free liftgate and rain-sensing wipers. Both have the same off-road hardware. If you spend hot afternoons in the car, the ventilated seats are the deciding feature.

TrailSport Blackout vs. TrailSport Elite

TrailSport Blackout $51,495 vs. TrailSport Elite $53,695

$2,200 separates them, and they solve different wants. Blackout is the look; Elite is the comfort. If you want both, the Elite Blackout combines them.

TrailSport Elite vs. Elite Blackout

TrailSport Elite $53,695 vs. TrailSport Elite Blackout $55,195

$1,500 for black wheels, black badges and black skid garnishes. The equipment list is otherwise identical, so this is purely about the look.

2027 vs. 2026

2027 Passport Changes

Higher TrailSport ride height

Honda reengineered the TrailSport suspension for 9.6 in. of ground clearance (8.3 in. on the RT-L) and better approach, breakover and departure angles.

New TrailSport look

More pronounced fender flares, a darker resculpted lower front fascia, a reshaped front skid plate and amber LED hood lights.

More standard TrailSport equipment

TrailWatch and a heated steering wheel, previously TrailSport Elite features, are now standard on the TrailSport.

Darker Blackout

Black front and rear fascias join the Blackout package's black wheels and badges.

Smoke Blue Pearl

A new blue replaces Obsidian Blue Pearl on all trims.

Higher prices

MSRP is up $245 on the RT-L, $1,345 on the TrailSport and $1,045 on the TrailSport Elite.

On the test drive

How to Test-Drive a Passport in Merced County

Book back-to-back drives and use these to compare trims on roads you actually drive.

  1. If you can, take both trims toward Highway 140 through the Merced River canyon to Yosemite. Listen for the difference between the RT-L's all-season tires and the TrailSport's all-terrains.
  2. On a hot day, try the TrailSport Elite's ventilated seats against the TrailSport's HondaTex. It's the clearest way to judge that $3,700 step.
  3. Sit in the back seat of both. The TrailSport's moonroof costs about an inch of rear headroom; see if you notice.
  4. Have us show you TrailWatch and the Multi-View cameras in the lot; they're most useful at tight trailheads and steep driveways.
  5. Pair your phone and sign into Google built-in during the drive so you're testing your own apps.
  6. Check your garage: the TrailSport is 74.5 in. tall, 1.4 in. taller than the RT-L.
  7. Fold the 60/40 rear seat and load what you actually haul: a cooler, a stroller, a kayak paddle. You get 44 cu ft behind the rear seat.
  8. Bring your trailer plug type. The TrailSport's hitch uses a 7-pin connector.
  9. Merge onto Highway 99 or Highway 140 and feel how the V6 and 10-speed pull. Set adaptive cruise and let it follow traffic.

2027 Passport Trims: Frequently Asked

What are the 2027 Honda Passport trim levels?

The 2027 Honda Passport comes in three trims: RT-L, TrailSport and TrailSport Elite. There are also two factory versions: the RT-L Towing, which adds a Class III hitch to the RT-L, and a Blackout package for the TrailSport and TrailSport Elite.

How much does the 2027 Honda Passport cost?

MSRP is $45,195 for the RT-L, $45,895 for the RT-L Towing, $49,995 for the TrailSport, $51,495 for the TrailSport Blackout, $53,695 for the TrailSport Elite and $55,195 for the TrailSport Elite Blackout. Add the $1,595 destination charge and $455 for premium paint colors.

What is the difference between the Passport RT-L and TrailSport?

The TrailSport adds off-road hardware: an off-road-tuned suspension with 9.6 in. of ground clearance (vs. 8.3 in.), all-terrain tires, skid plates, recovery hooks, TrailWatch cameras and a factory hitch. It also adds a panoramic moonroof, heated steering wheel and 115-volt outlets. The RT-L keeps leather-trimmed seats, a gray interior option and better fuel economy. The TrailSport costs $4,800 more.

Which Passport trim should I get for driving around Merced County?

For paved drives like Highway 140 through the Merced River canyon to Yosemite, any Passport works, and the RT-L's all-season tires and mileage suit them. For dirt roads in the Sierra National Forest, the TrailSport's clearance, all-terrain tires and skid plates are worth it.

Is the TrailSport Elite worth it?

It's worth it if comfort matters. For $3,700 over the TrailSport you get perforated leather, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, Bose audio with 12 speakers, second-row climate controls, a hands-free liftgate, rain-sensing wipers and rear-door sunshades.

What does the RT-L Towing add?

A factory Class III trailer hitch with harness and hitch panel, for $700 over the RT-L. Nothing else changes.

What comes with the Passport Blackout package?

Black 18-inch alloy wheels, black Honda badges and black front and rear skid garnishes, for $1,500 on the TrailSport or TrailSport Elite. Equipment and capability are unchanged.

Is the 2027 Passport AWD or 4WD?

All-wheel drive. Every trim uses Honda's i-VTM4 torque-vectoring AWD with Trail Torque Logic; there's no two-wheel-drive version.

What is the 2027 Passport towing capacity?

5,000 lbs on every trim when properly equipped. The RT-L Towing and both TrailSport trims include a factory Class III hitch. Honda recommends premium fuel when towing more than 3,500 lbs.

Does the 2027 Passport TrailSport have leather seats?

No. The TrailSport uses HondaTex synthetic leather and cloth with orange stitching. The RT-L has leather-trimmed seats and the TrailSport Elite has perforated leather.

Does the 2027 Honda Passport have a third row?

No. The Passport is a two-row SUV that seats five. For a third row, look at the Honda Pilot.

Is the 2027 Passport TrailSport lifted?

It rides higher than the RT-L. Honda reengineered the TrailSport suspension for 2027, giving 9.6 inches of ground clearance versus 8.3 inches on the RT-L.

What gas mileage does the 2027 Passport get?

The RT-L is EPA-rated at 19 city, 25 highway and 21 combined mpg. TrailSport trims are rated at 18 city, 22 highway and 20 combined. All run on regular unleaded fuel and have an 18.5-gallon tank.

What engine is in the 2027 Honda Passport?

Every trim uses a 3.5-liter direct-injected V6 rated at 280 hp and 258 lb-ft, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

Which 2027 Passport trims have a heated steering wheel?

The TrailSport and TrailSport Elite. The heated wheel is new to the TrailSport for 2027 and isn't offered on the RT-L.

Which 2027 Passport has ventilated seats?

Only the TrailSport Elite, including the Elite Blackout. It also adds heated outboard rear seats.

Is Apple CarPlay standard on the 2027 Passport?

Yes, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every trim, with Google built-in, Alexa Built-in and a wireless charger.

What changed on the 2027 Passport?

TrailSport trims got a taller reengineered suspension (9.6 in. clearance), a new front fascia and amber hood lights; the TrailSport added TrailWatch and a heated wheel; Blackout added black fascias; and Smoke Blue Pearl replaced Obsidian Blue Pearl.

What is the 2027 Passport's cargo space?

44 cu ft behind the rear seat on every trim, and up to 104.6 cu ft (RT-L) or 104.4 cu ft (TrailSport trims) with it folded.
